Sunday offers 2-hour workshops in 3 periods, which you may choose a la carte. Take 1, 2, or 3! Aubrey Atwater will do a lunch-time presentation for all festival participants.

Friday & Saturday Concerts feature extended performances by our teaching artists, offering a cohesive and inspiring program for the audience.

Mountain Dulcimer Classes:

A Song for Peace in the Middle East
Elaine Conger

(Intermediate) 3-part arrangement for mountain dulcimer – Okay, so peace might not happen, but we can still play a peaceful song, right?! Erev Shel Shoshanim (“Evening of Roses”) is a poetic Hebrew love song well known throughout the Middle East, especially in Israeli and Jewish music circles. The song was first recorded in 1956 and its melody is a staple in many Jewish weddings. You’ll love playing it with your dulcimer ensemble with parts for two standards and bass. Get this: I’ll even teach you a simple folk dance to go with it!

Due to copyright restrictions, an official copy of the tab must be purchased in advance at:

https://www.sheetmusicdirect.com/en-US/se/ID_No/1412235/Product.aspx?aff_id=736549. Email proof of purchase to musicwithcongers@gmail.com

String Side Up
Judy House

(Beginner) You want to play the mountain dulcimer. Let’s get off to a great start. In this class we will learn to tune, strum, fret, take care of our dulcimer, read tab and play our first tunes. It will all involve loads of excitement, information, and laughs! Fasten your seatbelts and let’s take off into a wonderful new world! Bring your instrument, a Snark or Korg tuner, and a pick!

Waltzing with Jay & Molly
Melanie Johnston

(Intermediate) Jay Ungar and Molly Mason have composed many, many beautiful waltzes. I have worked with them to arrange 22 selections from their “Catskill Mountain Waltzes and Airs” book. In this repertoire workshop we will learn tunes from my dulcimer book of the same name.
Equipment Needed: Dulcimer tuned in DAD. 1 ½ fret helpful but not required.

Approaches to Improvisation
Sarah Kate

(Advanced) I wanna show you how to loosen up and liven up your playing. I’m gonna give you the tools to be able to make up interesting and musical things on the fly. We’ll start with learning two ways I approach improvisation. Then I’ll be teaching a simple tune with lots of room to experiment, then using these approaches to improvise within the structure of the tune. Knowledge of chords and chord shapes will be very helpful for the class. DAD tuning.

Hammer Dulcimer Classes:

Adding Chromatic Runs to Fiddle Tunes
Katie Moritz

(Advanced) Go ahead and show off! This workshop will present some arrangements of common fiddle tunes filled to the brim with chromatic embellishments. Demonstrate and improve your flashy skills, even when playing the simplest tunes.

First "Strings" First
Pam Bowman

(Beginner) Within this class we will touch on the important “First” considerations when learning the Hammered Dulcimer – hammer hold, getting a good “bounce” – hammer patterns, developing muscle memory – markers, patterns (and more) all while learning a tune! – “Simple Gifts”

Sat. Class Period 2

910:15am PST | 1011:15am MST
11am12:15pm CST | 121:15pm EST

Mountain Dulcimer Classes:

Cool Cat on a Tennessee Farm
Elaine Conger

(Advanced) Standard dulcimer solo with optional bass – We all love to play fiddle tunes in a jam, but sometimes it’s nice to blues them up a bit and make them new again. Here I’ve taken the standard, “Gray Cat on a Tennessee Farm,” and made it “cool” by just shifting the beats here, there, and just about everywhere! Add a bass dulcimer part and you’re off to a blues bar on Beale Street! We’ll be in DAd tuning but a 1+ fret will be mandatory to make it bluesy. If you have an 8+ on your standard, all the better, but it’s not required.

DAd Fretboard Power
DJ Hamouris

(Beginner ) Learning the notes available on your instrument – where they are, how scales are devised, and how chords are built – gives you So. Much. Power! Working with the (mostly) diatonic standard fretboard in DAD, you’ll get the information you need, with resources to refer to as learning tools. More advanced musicians will gain a solid review and be able to apply these principles to chord shapes on the standard dulcimer.

Irish Inspiration for a New Year
Jessica Comeau

(Intermediate) Fly away on the wings of music to Ireland with the melodies of “The Chanter’s Tune,” “The Wind that Shakes the Barley,” and “Buachaille on Eirne.” On our journey, we will explore ornamentations and techniques to make Celtic music come to life, including hammer-ons and pull-offs. Please come with a capo and be prepared to retune!

All Instrument Classes:

Your Practice Toolbox
Judy House

(All Levels – All Instruments) When it’s time to sit down and practice, what do we do? Most of us have no idea! We will be looking at things to do and ways to use your practice time wisely to get the most benefit out of that time. I’ll give you some ways to use the metronome not only for keeping steady time, but to help perfect your music, and some tried and true practice tips to get those songs under your fingers!

Hammer Dulcimer Classes:

Contemporary 6/8 Workshop
Katie Moritz

(Intermediate) I’ll teach my favorite exercise, which uses a contemporary “pop” progression as a canvas for practicing various techniques in 6/8 time. We will work on non-alternating sticking patterns, hand separation, bass bridge accuracy, and improvisation.

Mountain Dulcimer Classes:

How to Add Bass Dulcimer Lines to Familiar Tunes
Elaine Conger

(All Levels) So you have obtained a bass dulcimer; now what do you do with it? This class will give you the basic knowledge of how to add a bass line to tunes you already know. We’ll start with a jam tune or two and show you how to add a bass line in real time to a song that just screams for an alternating pattern. We like to play more than jam tunes, though, so what do you do if it’s a nice ballad or a rock tune? Come to class and find out! A bass dulcimer tuned DAd with a 1+ fret is required, because you can’t groove without it!

Chromatic MD: Adding Chromaticism
Erin Mae

(Advanced) This class will give you tools to help you use all those extra frets without learning all new repertoire. We’ll explore the blues scale, chord substitutions, and try a lot of chromatic variations in familiar fiddle tunes. Tab will include diatonic (half frets) and chromatic (consecutive frets) numbering systems. Suitable for new chromatic mountain dulcimer players if you’ve played standard dulcimer.

In the Cycle of the Year
Jessica Comeau

(Beginner) Many English folk songs and medieval pieces from throughout Europe have celebrated the four seasons of the year. This class proposes to introduce a sampling of some of these beautiful, simple melodies that reflect so eloquently the sentiments of the seasons and to share the histories of these songs. The songs we will play are the following: (Spring) May Day Carol, (Summer) Sumer is Icumen In, (Fall) Hey Ho, Nobody at Home, (Winter) In des jares zirclikeit. DAd tuning and others; bring a capo.

Hammer Dulcimer Classes:

Nifty Riffs & Developing Creative Ideas
Katie Moritz

(All Levels) I will teach some of my favorite riffs. These are fun, easy, and most importantly, buildable. I will demonstrate how we can expand on these musical ideas to meet and improve any playing level while also developing crowd-pleasing music. (This workshop will not have a handout)

Let's Swing It! "In the Mood"
Pam Bowman

(Intermediate) Swing, syncopation, and fun are 3 top describers for this jiving song from the 30’s! An arrangement with rhythmic hammer patterns, a few “bluesy” patterns and areas in the music for changing it up (varying the melody line) as we progress from the jazzy intro – to the end.

All Instrument Classes:

Put That Tab in Your Tablet
Melanie Johnston

(All Levels) If you have binders full of music and cart them with you when you go out to play, you may want to consider an electronic music database program for your tablet. There are apps for all tablet types. In this class we will specifically work with a popular program – forScore – specific to iPad. If you have an iPad with forScore installed, bring it to class. Alternatively and if you don’t have forScore or a tablet, you can come to just listen and see what these programs can do. Class will cover getting your music into your tablet, annotating, creating setlists and using some of the other tools forScore offers. It will change your musical life!
Equipment Needed: No dulcimers required for class. Optional – Bring your iPad with forScore installed.

Songs of Jean Ritchie
Sarah Kate

(Intermediate) We’ll be celebrating the matriarch of the dulcimer world by learning a handful of her original songs. Jean’s songwriting weaves a rich tapestry, illustrating the joys and sorrows of life in Southern Appalachia. She was a strong voice during the Folk Revival, and the anti-mountain top removal and strip mining movement, and used her songs as a tool of resistance and protection for the mountains she loved. This will be mostly a singing class, all chord instruments welcome! I’ll be sharing chord charts and lyrics for all songs.

Creating an Ensemble Arrangement
Judy House

(Intermediate) We will take a familiar melody and try our hand at writing a 3-part arrangement with melody, harmony, and bass parts. In writing an arrangement, the sky is the limit! This can be thrilling or, you may want to pull your hair out before it’s all over…but humbling when you hear a group playing your arrangement!

Renaissance & English Country Dance Duets
Jessica Comeau & DJ Hamouris

(Intermediate) The distinctively elegant and nuanced scales of Renaissance music and English country dances can emerge more fully on the mountain dulcimer when arranged as duets with one dulcimer playing in D-A-C and the other in C-G-C with a capo on the 1st fret. Among our deliciously haunting selections for this class are “Greensleeves,” “The Three Ravens,” and “Abbots Bromley Horn Dance.” Capo Required

Fun with Music Theory (Fun? Really?!)
Elaine Conger - MD

Yes, music theory as it relates to the dulcimer can be fun as well as eye-opening for many! In this workshop we’ll discuss the basics like the notes available on the dulcimer, rhythmic notation, time signatures, and keys and chords available to the dulcimer player while tuned DAd (1-5-8 tuning). We’ll also cover chord shapes which will add “light bulbs” to your playing. In fact, you may see a light or two come on over a few participant’s heads! You’ll also become privy to what the “dulcimer salute” is, and be exposed to the basics of hearing the 3 primary chord changes which works in any key. Come with your theory questions, too!

The Art of Accompanying Songs: Baritone Version
DJ Hamouris

(Intermediate) Learning to accompany a song requires a variety of skills. You must become familiar with both the melody and harmony of the piece, the mood/genre to be reflected, and multiple styles of playing to find a satisfying part. In this 2- hour workshop you will be presented with several examples in different keys and work through one or 2 tunes as a class project. This class will help those looking to build skills in both arranging and chord progressions. AEA tuning, 1+ fret required

Hammer Dulcimer Classes:

Westphalia Waltz - Full Embellished Arrangement
Katie Moritz

(Intermediate) Never discount the tunes you learned when you were just starting out. Their simplicity and familiarity combine to provide a gold mine for arranging and embellishing. In this workshop, I will teach my contest-winning arrangement of Westphalia Waltz, which is the first real tune I ever learned and still remains in my performance repertoire today.
